Biography:

At the most fundamental level my work is concerned with the making process itself and the physical presence of structure and materials.  The hands-on understanding of materials and space is at the core of what art means to me, both as a personal creative process and a link with a continuum of culture, history and the natural world. I see the accumulated wealth of technological knowledge as a crucial aspect of cultural heritage, providing an essential platform for innovation and creativity.

In the last few years I have become increasingly involved with cast iron as a sculptural medium, which in turn has led to contacts with artists in the United States and Europe, particularly Poland.  Part of its appeal is the communal effort required in such a physical and technically demanding process which brings both its own intense drama.

The complex process of metal casting casting is a good compliment to forging and fabrication techniques drawn from my engineering background which allow a flexibility and spontaneity which underpins my practice. This direct relationship with materials encourages me to take an intuitive approach and I try to bring a basic honesty of purpose to my work so that is an exploration rather than the dogmatic statement of an idea.
